ARTcetera 2004

Friday, October 8th marked the sixth annual ARTcetera.  Linda Ferrin and Charles Bernick, co-chairs of ARTcetera 2004, inspired their volunteer committees to develop and execute our most successful event to date.  The generous donation of an original oil painting by Diane Leonard, an Arizona-based impressionist, served as the signature piece of artwork and as a striking reminder of the far-flung support that ARTcetera enjoys!

Attendees were met by a stunning display of wines as they ascended the escalator into the beautiful Harbor Side Ballroom of the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center.  This “Wall of Wine” was donated by members of the community and given away as collections at the conclusion of the evening.  Due to the kind donation of over 73 auction items, the ever-popular silent auction was divided into two categories, to include a super silent auction.  The captivating selection of original jewelry and regional art as well as a wide variety of merchandise and services made it difficult for the 249 guests to decided where to bid first…and last!

Those who were lucky enough to get tickets for the sold out event, feasted on a fabulous gourmet menu created by chef Paul Madsen featuring lobster-tail broiled with candied ginger and mango butter, chef-carved New York Strip steak with Bordelaise sauce and fresh horseradish and a roulade of walleye with Chardonnay Cream.

Auctioneer Kurt Johnson was introduced to the ARTcetera audience when he took the stage to auction off 34 luxury items, including an exclusive trip to New York City on a private jet, an autographed photograph of the Rat Pack and a private skate party with Jamie Langenbrenner to an enthusiastic and charitable crowd.  Kurt, an auctioneer from White Bear Lake, led the crowd through a lively auction full of laughter, friendly competition and extremely charitable giving.

After expenses, ARTcetera 2004 raised over $156,000 that will join the proceeds from 2002 and 2003 to fund a cancer resource library that will be housed in the new cancer center being built by Miller Dwan Medical Center and the Duluth Clinic.  The resource library will be a one-stop information center for the entire community on cancer and related issues.  Resources will include Internet access with links to cancer-specific Web sites, educational brochures, reference texts, tapes, videos, DVDs, as well as current cancer-related magazines and journals.  The library will be geared toward the lay reader and focus on helping people learn about the disease, medical treatments and emotional healing.  The library will be open and available to the public as the region’s only library dedicated to cancer.
