ARTcetera 2001

ARTcetera 2001 was held on Saturday, October 6, in the Harbor Side Ballroom of the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. Richard and Elizabeth Burns, co-chairs of the third annual ARTcetera, headed up a hardworking committee of volunteers from many segments of the community. A popular new addition to the event was a silent auction, which allowed attendees to place silent bids on 22 items during the social and dinner hour. The event was attended by 180 people who enjoyed a scrumptious gourmet dinner featuring hardwood-smoked Atlantic salmon, iced Gulf shrimp, a variety of pastas and chef-carved tenderloin of beef. Following dinner, auctioneer Karen Lee Sorbo, from the Twin Cities area, auctioned off 59 items which included a one-of-a-kind gold-and-greenstone pendant created especially for ARTcetera by John Marxhausen, a year-long lease on a Honda CRV, a wild eagle release and a vacation opportunity in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Considering the tragic events of 9/11 just the month before, the Foundation was gratified by the community’s dedication to the event, which raised an unexpected $140,600 after expenses.

ARTcetera 2001 was dedicated to the purchase of a new Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) Linear Accelerator that provides the most advanced and focused radiation treatment available anywhere in the world. The IMRT Linear Accelerator makes it possible for physicians to provide three-dimensional dose distribution of radiation directly to tumors, which not only spares more normal tissue, but accurately conforms to the volume of the tumor by imaging the irregularities more clearly, reducing complications and increasing patient comfort. By allowing very aggressive treatment, it significantly improves patients’ chances for survival and lowers the risk of complications.
