ARTcetera 2000 was held on Saturday, October 7, at the Great Lakes Aquarium. The success of the first event attracted many new volunteers and the planning committee, headed by Florence Collins and Howard Klatzky, doubled in size. The task of moving the auction to such a unique venue as the Aquarium was made easier by nearly 30 volunteers who made the evening flow smoothly. The event was attended by 229 people who enjoyed a scrumptious gourmet dinner prepared by Bellisio’s Italian Restaurant and which featured butterflied leg of lamb, bourbon-glazed New York strip loin and sautéed shrimp and scallops. Auctioneer Todd Finn took the stage once again to auction off 83 items, which included all the necessities for a Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness trip, a Craig Blacklock photograph and a stay in a Portuguese castle. Again, the goal of $120,000 was exceeded as the event raised an astounding $149,500 after all expenses were paid.

The proceeds of ARTcetera 2000 were directed to new equipment that dramatically improved the delivery of radiation to cancerous tumors. Miller-Dwan Radiation Oncology department has been the unduplicated provider of that service for Duluth and the surrounding area, each year providing radiation treatment to approximately 1,200 patients. The equipment and the space needed to safely and accurately deliver radiation is by far the most expensive component of delivering cancer treatment. The resources needed to bring new, lifesaving technology to our area requires continued philanthropic investments.
